Ron Korb Biography
Flutist Ron Korb been travelling for years collecting and studying indigenous
woodwinds from South and North America, China, Indonesia, Cambodia and Ireland. His music is steeped in the diverse cultural traditions and experiences
of his travels and evokes images from around the world.
After graduating with honors from the University of Toronto with a degree in music performance, he began studying Asian bamboo flutes
with masters from many countries. At the same time, Ron was writing songs
for major artists in Hong Kong such as Alan Tam, Stephanie Lai and Yvonne Lau. One of his songs reached
double platinum status and another song written for Roman Tam won the award
for gBest Original Compositionh by RTHK (Radio and Television Hong Kong).
Ron has played on dozens of major motion picture soundtracks many of which
have won Gemini awards and several that have been nominated for Academy
Awards and awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Some of the films have included
Ang Leefs The Ice Storm and Ride with the Devil, Robert Lepagefs NO, Atom Egoyanfs Exotica, Sweet Hereafter and Feliciafs Journey, Mira Nairfs Kama Sutra John Woofs Blackjack and the 3D IMAX film Space Station narrated by Tom Cruise. More recent credits include The Snow Walker and Return To Kandahar, Being Julia and James Ivoryfs The White Countess starring Ralph Fiennes and Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave which takes place
in 1940s Shanghai.
Ron has performed twice at The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and The Glastonbury Festival in England. Other major concerts include Madison Square Gardens in New York, The National Theatre in Panama City, The World Art Stage in Edinburgh, Arnhem Cathedral in Holland, Heian Shrine in Kyoto and The Century Theatre in Beijing. Ron has also toured in Taiwan, China, Singapore and in Japan where he represented Canada at Expo 2005 in Nagoya.
Ron Korb has recorded fifteen solo albums release internationally as well
as recording with other many other artists including Liona Boyd, Jim McCarty
from the Yardbirds and Olivia Newton John. He has been featured on many television and radio
programs throughout the world and has performed for Queen Elizabeth, Princess
Takamado, Peter Gabriel, and was featured on the World Youth Day recording
for Pope John Paul as well as The Dalai Lamafs Sacred Music Festival in
Chiang Mai Thailand. He also performs with orchestra and was a featured soloist in The Lord
Of The Rings Symphony at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.
