Jo Norton - review from I-moves season, Fringe Festival
2005 Sunameke Pacific Island Performance will make you laugh, gasp
and wonder how so much noise can come from such beautiful dancing women. Their
glowing skin and beaming smiles come straight from Darwin in the eTop Endf of
Australia. The Sunameke women will share with you through their special brand of
Pacific Island Dance, their take on their mixed Pacific Island (mainly Papua New
Guinean) Australian heritage. Faifa ke Vavine entwines old and new, identity and family in a choreographic exploration of a Papua New Guinean legend, Kolou Vavine. It is 'a journey of 1000 miles' 'between two shoresf, an unearthing of the dancers experiences in dealing with their mixed heritage. A view into the relationships, the similarities, connections and histories shared with each other using the medium of traditional and contemporary Pacific Island dance. A choreographic journey revealing the power of Faifa (directed fate) that brings the dancers relationships full circle through good and hard times. A touching piece punctuated with humour and good-hearted fun. Come prepared to experience through laughter and dance the lives of the Sunameke women. Contemporary Pacific Island Dance at its best!
