Odissi originated in the district of Orissa over 1200 years ago. It was first danced by the Maharis who were known to be the handmaidens of God. Elegant hand gestures, seductive glances, rhythmic footwork, and sensuous poses reminiscence of the sculptures on the Hindu temple walls create the dance.
