La dual Band - ITALY Anna Zapparoli in 1933
and All That - Brecht, Weill & Friends a show orchestrated and devised by Mario
Borciani The magnificent Anna
Zapparoli, well known to Edinburgh Festival audiences, hits the Avignon scene
for the first time with the hit cabaret show 1933
and All That.
Featuring
songs by Brecht, Weill and other protagonists of the dazzling season of German
cabaret, the show is a story of travel, exile and intertwined destinies tearing
through the first half of the 20th century, from the Berlin years to Broadway. Devised and orchestrated by Mario Borciani, it stars Anna Zapparoli and a hot four-piece jazz band performing songs by Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill, Frank Wedekind, Ira Gershwin and Friedrich Hollaender, Marlene Dietrichfs favourite composer. The classic songs help illustrate the story of Brecht and Weillfs transition from jobbing lyricist and musician through the dark and politically disturbing cabaret underworld of 1930fs Berlin and the escape from Nazi Europe to the glittering lights of Broadway and Hollywood. Anna Zapparoli doesnft just perform Brechtfs songs, she inhabits them. Born in the UK and brought up in Milan, she studied at the Scuola del Piccolo Teatro directed by Giorgio Strehler. She has performed with Dario Fo and Luca Ronconi. gOne of the most arresting performances Ifve witnessed in fifteen years of Fringe reviewingc Brecht comes as naturally to Zapparoli as breathing.h Rob Adams, The Herald **** Criticsf Choice - The Scotsman eTop-notchf - Time Out eterrific songsf The Stage |
